about
I wrote this song about anxiety. When I was 11, I started waking up with a burning in my stomach, and that got progressively worse until I would wake up paralysed. Inside I was on fire, but from the outside, I could have been dead - hence the song title.
To cut a long and depressing story short, my anxiety resulted in me dropping out of school when I was 14, and I probably would have wasted away if I didn’t get so passionate about songwriting and recording. So it means a hell of a lot to me that I’m now able to share this song with you all. I hope you enjoy it, whether you relate or not. And if you are struggling, you don’t exist in a vacuum, please find someone you can open up to.
All the love in the world,
Josh DC♥️
lyrics
Almost got out of bed today
Felt the sun rise up my face
But I made the same mistakes
I was ready for one big win
But the covers trapped me in
Fear is the heaviest weight
We're dead in the morning light
Already lost the fight
Before it's even started
Dead in the morning light
Already lost the fight
Before it's even started
Locked up in my soft cell
Behind the window into hell
Where I watch the world turn around and around
Inside my body's a fire alarm
But I can't even move my arms
I wanna explode
Like I'm a bomb, but I've been disarmed
We're dead in the morning light
Already lost the fight
Before it's even started
Dead in the morning light
Already lost the fight
Before it's even started
Made friends with enemies
And friends with ends
You stick your pins in me
But I don't care
They made me human
But I have grown
So get me out of here
Get me home
I can do this on my own
Can't get rid of me
You never will
Saving myself
To save the day
Don't you take my soul away
We're dead in the morning light
Already lost the fight
Before it's even started
Dead in the morning light
Already lost the fight
Before it's even started
Even started
Even started
Even started
